machine embroidery doodles

I was amazed to find that it was quarter past four. The day passed at the sewing machine, testing out some of the ideas I had before I went to sleep last night… how to achieve a machined line that has life and energy… how to work the needle to construct the flat, tapestry-like cloth that I’m after.

It’s important to me at this stage just to doodle, not to design, not to worry about colour too much, just use threads from the box in front of me, simple shapes, think about texture and surface.

There’s a pleasing malleable softness to today’s experiments that the photo doesn’t convey…

pleased to see you enjoying and experimenting... i think that's what i need ... a methodical approach with no expectation but just the time to slowly experiment with techniques... great sue!

Sue, this looks very interesting.... Being playful often leads to great discovery.
It's so funny about your losing track of time. I think that is always a very good sign.

hello!
I found you via the dorset cereal blog award thingy (I'm Lucy of Attic24)...and I am LOVING your blog!!
I also did an embroidery degree in the late 80's, and have met alice Kettle and Jane Pouton ( i was at manchester and both tutored there on and off)....anyhow, its lovely to meet a fellow embroiderer, although I don't do that much sewing these days since i discovered crochet :o)

Love to you

oh sorry, me again....I was reading back through your archives and see you were at manc too!!!!! I was there doing embroidery 1988-1991, so possibly a little bit after you..with Anne Morrell, Judy, Isabel etc etc.....ahhh seems so long ago now. I went to an alumni reunion there last yr and all the tutors were there, v little has changed in the last 20 yrs really.

anyhow...need to go get my daughter out the bath now (naughty mummy surfing the net instead of doing bath duty!) but will be back to browse more!!

it's beautiful, so nice to see something very different from your hand embroidery, it's also so intriguing as I'd love to know how it's done ;) one day maybe you can show me ;) I look forward to see the developments. It's nice isn't it to create without a rigorous aim but just for personal enjoyment!! Lv L xxx

I love these experiments and wish I was cleverer with my sewing machine, as well as free enough to let go and create.

It's really everso simple, just drop the feed dog and set the machine to zig zag or straight stitch. Fabric in a hoop to keep it taut, away you go! Be brave ;-)
