a windy day is not a day for thatching

Autumn is blowing in. Today we have gusts of forty miles an hour - I love the sound of the wind whooshing through the tall trees which surround our house - a mixture of wild danger and the comfort of being indoors.

I do love this time of year - but then again, I love every time of year - however, this time of golden change, fruitfulness, laugh-out-loud windiness and the whirligig dancing of leaves seems so full of possibility and excitement. Whether it's the association with the fresh start of a new year at school, or memories of coming to Manchester to start my degree course, or the fact that every house I've moved to has been in the autumn, I don't know. But for me, things begin in September.

I too find September a time of new beginnings probably due to new school terms for both me (long long ago) my daughter and when teaching. When the sun shines it is all the more appreciated now that the shorter days are fast arriving.

I am torn between the sensation you describe so well and having to keep at bay the knowledge that it is going to get darker! Autumn requires true living in the moment which I am getting much better at as I get older.

I always think of the year beginning in September too. It's the feeling of change in the air I think.

I can smell freshly sharpened pencils and crisp brown leaves.

Thats just how I feel. I wonder if its because we are conditioned to it through the academic year? Or is it just really a good time to start anew?
I was pegging washing out today and actually stopped to listen to the swishing sound of the wind in our larch tree. But it made me a bit sad. Its level with the roof now and its as wide as the garden and the roots are cracking the path. It has to go.

hear, hear! I share the same excitement for autumn. September and October have always been my favourite months (especially since living in England). You know when they say "turning a new leaf"? Well, I always always associate that with autumn :D

Well, after I left my permanent job in the theatre, I lost the feeling that the year begins in September. But you are right - this month inevitably brings the taste of a new beginning, especially if you have children to remind.:) We are preparing to meet the "gipsy Summer" here in Bulgaria. It's so pleasant to let the sun rays caress your body and hair, to feel warm and cosy, while walking under the shades of the leaves, just beginning to turn yellow, to watch in wonder how nature is changing its clothes! Thank you for this emotional post and... have a marvellous September,Sue!xx

I don't really know what to think of September. In some ways it can be a calm, settled month. The light over the Yorkshire Dales where we live can be beautiful and the colours in the country and garden become less uniformly green. On the other hand it's darker in the mornings and evenings. I find it more difficult to get up and I can't wander round the garden when I get home from work. Also the lovely blue hue of a summer's night disappears. Sorry to put a dampener on this, but I think I prefer April when I can wake up again!
