and this week

This week we did lino cutting. I hated it! It totally divided the class into those who fell into a kind of dreamy right-side-of-the-brain absorption (most people), and those who moaned continually and felt no connection with the technique at all (me). I found the carving clumsy and effortful, and the results two-dimensional and uninspiring... but now I know a little bit more about what is 'me' and what not to bother with next time...! The drawing I used for inspiration is above, the resulting print is shown below.

HAHA ...this has made me giggle! I also don't like lino printing ... i always feel clumsy and clunky and have actually pushed the cutting tool into my thumb before now! Beautiful drawings as always.

I love your sketch and your print! I've only done lino cutting when I was in school many, many years ago, ended up stabbing myself in the arm LOL! I loved it though and still have the little print of a red cabbage!

Loved your drawing but think you should not let the linear (yes, a pun!) approach of the class put you off lino-cuts and printing.
Maybe you could be subversive and mix printwork, drawing& brushwork. Combining techniques can be fun and relaxing, and fun can feed energy and ideas back into the technique you prefer.

Im also not to keen on lino cutting, also my joints just cant take it any more and I end up cutting my hands rather than the lino (not a pretty picture)... But I loved the printing you did in your last post, that looks so cool and I can see you use that print for a whole lot of things (it would look very nice on fabric). I got so inspired now, cant wait to move in to our new house and get started...

Great work!!!!

I'm always amazed when people don't enjoy lino cutting - I love it, especially the chiselling bit. The first print I did at uni was awful and put me off for years!!

Sue, it's good that the workshops are giving you so many different printmaking opportunities, and perhaps even some instruction from folks who are advocates of particular techniques.

Seems like a great feast of exploration! You are continuing to remind me how much fun printmaking can be. I cannot quite remember how long ago it was that I made a linoprint...think my little tool box is around here somewhere.

I love what you're doing with all the prints in these posts. Really inspiring.

Lino printing. I'm never too keen on cutting the block, but put up with that because I really the quality of mark on the resulting print. Years since I made one mind you.

I love the resulting print though! No use to you if you don't like the process, but it is so vivid and clear.

I like what you've done Sue. Sort of know what you mean about lino printing too, but just love the smell of the stuff when carving into it! Have a good week. Lesley x

Lino cutting was never me, either! But I love your carborundum + prints. what inspired the original drawings there?

At least you have been able to try out different methods to find which suits you best, a very good course you chose, I think.

I love the results of lino-printing but I'm afraid my own efforts have been clumsy. Your work is beautiful, and your blog is brave… you don't mind revealing a little of yourself, and I love reading about you. Do continue with the excellent work!
